Lot description

Franz Ittenbach (German, 1813-1879) Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well Oil on paper laid on canvas 10-1/2 x 8 inches (26.7 x 20.3 cm) Signed lower right: FIttenbach PROVENANCE: Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, Germany, November 27, 2015, lot 6066; Private collection, Chicago, Illinois, acquired from the above. An exceedingly devout Roman Catholic born at Königswinter near Bonn, Franz Ittenbach was a member of both the Nazarene Movement and the Düsseldorf School. At the age of nineteen, he began his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy, receiving private lessons from its president, Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow. Although he produced a number of stunning small easel paintings, such as the present works, Ittenbach devoted most of his energies to church decoration. His major projects and particularly those of a religious nature were always preceded by the Catholic exercises of confession and communion. The finest examples of these decorative cycles can be found in two churches of St. Remigius, one in Bonn, the other in Breslau. HID01801242017
