Lot description

SHEPARD ALONZO MOUNT (American, Long Island, 1804-1868), pair of oil on canvas portraits, to include: portrait of a lady (possibly Mrs. Louise Pettit Norton, niece of Mrs. Nancy Williamson Smith), 1855, signed ''S.A. Mount'' and dated to canvas verso, (craquelure, a few minor losses); and portrait of a gentleman (possibly Mr. Oliver M. Pettit, husband of Louise), 1857, signed ''S.A. Mount'' and dated to canvas verso, with stamp of supplier, Edward Dechaux, New York, (fine craquelure, scattered abrasions and lacunae). Canvases 34''h, 27''w. Provenance: Beaufort Historical Association, NC, 1989; deaccessioned at unknown date; acquired by present owner from a dealer, 2007. Catalog note: It is likely that the paintings originally belonged to Mrs. Louise Pettit (later Norton) and her husband Oliver M. Pettit, (the probable sitters), and, following the same line of descent as the William Sidney Mount portraits in the previous lot (139), were probably bequeathed at the same time to the Beaufort Historical Society, NC. Additional note: The male portrait has a sheet of paper pictured at lower left that is dated ''October 13, 1857'', a significant date in history pertaining to the Panic of 1857. On this date the Ohio Life & Trust Co. declared bankruptcy, causing the New York Stock Exchange to crash.
