For a short time he studied under the direction of Dusseldorf painter Albert Henrich and under the influence of the teacher initially painted mostly still lifes and flowers. During the subsequent, independent studies in museums interested in the Dutch genre painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, which became a lasting inspiration for him in the further work. Historicizing painting, costume scenes that take place in the "Dutch" interiors, and his narrative paintings, based on a clear and often humorous anecdote given, have gained popularity.
