Lot description
Study of the Heads of three Elderly Bearded Men, en sanguine and charcoal on heavy wove paper, unsigned, with backing marked "Andrea del Sarto, Coll. of Dr. Ed. Riggall." Unframed, 6 5/8" x 8 3/4" sheet, residue on back. Dr. Edward Riggall of London, was an important collector of works on paper, who catalogued the drawings of Cruikshank. He made a large donation from his collection to the British Museum in 1886 . His library was sold by Sotheby's, Wilkinson and Hodges on Tues, 22 March, 1893, and the four following days. He died in 1901.
