Penry Williams, Welsh 1802-1885- A thorn in the foot; oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'Penry Williams PI / Rome 1858.' (lower right), 32.5 x 48 cm. Provenance: With The Fine Art Society, London, no.B11/39, 1981.; With Espace Co. Ltd, no.F107.; An important Private Collection, UK. Note: Williams studied under Swiss born artist Henry Fuseli, RA (1741-1825). His landscapes bear the influence of the Classicism of 17th- and 18th-century European artists such as Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), particularly in Williams's frequent depictions of brightly-clad figures set within imposing Italianate settings.
