From 1961 to 1963, he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Paul Revere, APA 248, as Disbursing Officer. He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1963 to 1967, winning the Packard Prize for Drawing and the Ware Travelling Fellowship, which allowed him to visit the great art capitals of Europe. In 1967 he became Art Director of the Pucker/Safrai Gallery on Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts. In the early 1970's, he began annual summer trips from Japan to Italy to Crete and elsewhere gradually establishing his career as a painter of watercolor landscapes, with an annual Boston exhibition at Pucker/Safrai.Nagano ended his art directorship at the Gallery in 1989. In 1984 he made his first summer trip to Bali, and since then has spent two months annually there, producing a body of work primarily inspired by Bali, though other locales continued to figure in his work.He has had major exhibitions in Jakarta and Bali (Bamboo Gallery and Neka Museum in Ubud.) In 1997, his work took a turn from external to "internal" landscapes, still inspired by Bali, but with a developing symbolic vocabulary that took liberties with the actuality of landscapes. He calls these his "SymBALIst" works.Nagano continues to produce watercolors and other works in Honolulu.
