Lot description
Portrait of Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, Duc de Belle Ile (1684-1761), pastel on paper, laid to hardboard years ago, unsigned, identified on frame tag, housed in a replica gilt matched corner cove frame, under glass, OS: 31 1/2" x 27 1/2", SS: 23" x 19", restored on right edge of background, otherwise very good. This is one of five or six similar pastel portraits of the Marechal de France painted by de la Tour in 1748, the year Fouquet was created Duke and Peer of France, (at the conclusion of the Austrian War of Succession) and the year the first version of this portrait appeared in the Salon. That pastel was sold by Christie's, New York, on 23 Jan, 2004 for $388,300. Most notable variations in the other 1748 portraits by de la Tour place the red ribbon and insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece on top of or underneath the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The subject's bemused, cynical expression remained a constant.
