Polidoro da Lanciano (nach) Lanciano (um) 1515 - Venedig 1565 86 x 137 cm Christ and the Adulteress. Oil/canvas, relined. Private collection Baden-Baden. Polidoro executed the present subject in at least four versions, which are now in Brescia (Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo), two in Budapest (Szépmüvészeti Múzeum) and in London (Walpole Gallery). The present version is closely related to the second variant in Budapest (inv. no. 1054), of which a slightly different copy from the 17th century has survived, whose current whereabouts are unknown (cf. Vincenzo Massini, Polidoro da Lanciano, 2001, p. 203, fig. 71). At Archivio Zeri (Università di Bologna) two other versions based on the Budapest variant can be found, Collezione Brownlow, Grantham and Gallerie Fiorentine, Firenze (inv. 1800).
