Lot description
+ Technique: oil on canvas, mounted, framed, Signature: signed and dated lower right 'Hip.te Lazerges 1872', Dimensions: 61 x 40 cm (picture), 84 x 63 cm (frame), Condition: good, firnist, retouching in the background of the image, Comment: Graceful and dignified, Thetis, the mother of Achilles, stands in a rock grotto holding a nautilus shell to her ear. Her contrapposto posture seductively displays her torso and left leg behind gauze fabric. In his choice of textiles, the artist, who travelled to Algeria in 1830, was probably influenced by Oriental beauties. But with the reference to the tricolour in the choice of colours, Lazerges nevertheless shows himself to be a patriot.
