Lot description

The painter trained at the 'Torretta' of Cavalier d'Arpino in Rome, and his encounter with Caravaggio's painting was fundamental during his stay in Rome. This work, however, can be ascribed to a later phase of his production linked to the Venetian experience, starting in 1620. At that time, the lagoon city was in a sort of 'creative torpor' caused by the decline of the Republic. In this climate of uncertainty, important painters such as Ruschi, turned their gaze to the colours and atmospheres of the 16th century and to the moralising themes of history painting - as in this case - or to light and entertaining compositions.
