Lot description
Alfred William Hunt, RWS, British 1830-1896- Easedale Tarn; pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'A W Hunt / 1870' (lower right), 25 x 36.5 cm. Provenance: (Probably) With the Fine Art Society, 1884, no.86.; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 15 June 2000, lot 267.; Private Collection, UK (by descent to the present owner). Note: Easedale Tarn is a mountain lake located in the centre of the Lake District. The ascent from Grasemere was popular during the Victorian period, and a refreshment hut was even established there in the 19th Century to service the thirsty visitors. Hunt's works are distinguished by their poetic renderings of atmosphere. He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and the extraordinary detail apparent in his landscapes and the careful rendering of grass, leaves and trees is a consequence of this. Born in Liverpool, he frequently travelled around Britain, capturing the different landscapes he viewed, and indeed returned to the Lake District on a regular basis.
