KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) The exterior exquisitely carved in high relief to render a continuous scene of travellers in a mountain landscape, finely detailed with far and distant mountains, variously scattered pine and willow tress, depicting a scholar seated on horseback, crossing over a wooden bridge accompanied by his attendant holding a parasol supported on one shoulder suspending a travelling chest, whilst further along the footpath is another attendant burdened by a bundle of books and scrolls suspended from a yoke across his shoulder, observed by servants attending a lady seated on a water buffalo, securing in front of her a baby and young child, one side of a mountain inscribed with two characters, Gu Jue, followed by a seal, Zong Yu, the base and mouth rim mounted with rosewood 6 3/4 in.
