Lot description
Cittadini’s study of painting began in the Lombard environment in Daniele Crespi’s workshop. From 1634 to about 1637, he is documented in Bologna as Guido Reni’s apprentice; from 1645, he travels to Rome until he returned permanently to Bologna in 1650. In Rome, he approached the liveliest contemporary culture, as evidenced by the presence in the city of Nordic, French, and Neapolitan artists. He approached the Bamboccianti and the Roman vedutisti, who showed him the importance of depicting a more lively, naturalistic reality. The Portrait can be ascribed to the period of his maturity: in the detail of the clothes and space depicted, we see the effects of the Flemish lesson, just as in the psychological depth of the character, there is an echo of the rich Roman experience.
