Lot description
It is to the biographer Bernardo De Dominici that we owe the first information about the life and works of the Neapolitan painter Gaspare Lopez. We know that the artist approached an ornamental taste in painting influenced by French painters, such as Jean Baptiste Dubuisson. However, Lopez was a leading painter of flowers on the Neapolitan scene, following his own lively compositional and descriptive style. Far from the meticulous refinement of the Flemish painters, the brushstrokes in this work - datable to around 1710 - are more ‘vague,’ almost loose, but no less attentive to reality. Moreover, the composition seems almost to indicate a desire to demonstrate expertise in depicting various subjects, from the architectural ruins to flowers and fruit, from the landscape in the background to the variety of dishes on the scene.
