Lot description
The Neapolitan painter, entirely devoted to still lives with flowers, creates a pendant of significant impact and value. According to De Dominici, the artist travelled between Rome, Venice, and Poland; on these occasions, he probably came into contact with the Flemish 'floral painters' who were often active in Rome in the eighteenth century. This composition is marked by his experience: the landscape is absent and replaced by a severe neutral background; the cascade of flowers falling from the two tall vases is luxuriant and geometrically precious. Lopez was also successful in Florence, where he moved in the last phase of his life to serving the Grand Duke Gian Gastone de’ Medici, for whom he was the official painter. His still lives reveal an adherence to the light and decorative language of the Rococo expressed through a great variety of multicoloured flowers, rich composition, and brilliant chromatism.
