- BLES, David (Dutch 1821 - 1899). De ligte rouw [The light grief], 1857. Oil on panel, signed and dated 'David Bles 57' (upper right); with a hand-written note in pen and brown ink reading 'De ligte rouw - "Le Deuil léger" Entre la veuve d’une année. Et la veuve d’une journée. La différence est grande; on ne croirait jamais que ce fût la même personne; L’une fait fuir les gens, et l’autre a mille attraits. (Fables de la Fontaine Liv VI Le tableau ci joint a été peint par moi 27 Aout 1857 La Haye) David Bles', and two red wax seals, one with a double-headed eagle and one with a monogram ‘CM’ (on the reverse). Professionally restored and revarnished, stable craquelure throughout with a few larger cracks, edges slightly abraded, small dent in the upper edge, imprint of the frame, overall in very good condition.
