Lot description

MIGUEL JACINTO MELÉNDEZ Oviedo 1679 - Madrid 1734 Portrait of Queen Maria Luisa Gabriela de Saboya. H. 1702-1714 Oil on canvas Sizes 64.8 x 52.3 cm This unpublished portrait of Queen Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy is an interesting contribution to the pictorial corpus of the first painter Chamber of Felipe V Miguel Jacinto Meléndez. Of the set of portraits that are preserved of Felipe V's first wife, the one in question can be related to at least two versions of the effigy (Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Madrid and British Royal Collection). Unlike the latter, the portrayed woman has a beautiful feather fan and an elegant outfit according to her royal status. Particularly beautiful is the pastel color of the work that characterizes the best Meléndez portraits. We thank Doña Elena Santiago Páez for her help in cataloging this work.
