Lot description

Adam van Noort lived in his native Antwerp and mainly painted portraits and historical scenes. Apparently only a small part of his work has survived. Thanks to the engravers and, above all, the graphics by R. Sadeler, some of the pictures are still known. Adam van Noort's great pedagogical and sensitive talent, proves himself mainly as a teacher to his many students. Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonius van Dyck, and Sebastian Vrancx, Hendrick van Balen the Elder. Ä. and Jacob Jordaens, whose daughter Elisabeth Noort he was married and with whom he had three children, were probably his important students, with whom he had a long friendship. It is all the more significant that the present painting The Wedding at Canaa, by Adam van Noort, is a new discovery and enriches his narrow work. Image structure, composition and color tone, as well as the arrangement of the many figures in their different characters, and accumulations of metal vessels, which he often worked out precisely, are typical of his painting style and the Flemish painting of the late 16th and early 17th centuries
