A portrait of James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth president of the United States and one of the authors of the Federalist Papers. It is signed by the engraver, Jacques Reich (1852-1923), a Hungarian-born artist who produced etched portraits of many prominent American political figures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
