Lot description

Nick Miller (b.1962) History and Nature (2000) oil on canvas signed lower left and dated 2000 h:61  w:81.30 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Nick Miller's easel is like scaffolding in this composition, supporting the two elements mentioned in the title and indicating the practical work of the artist in the form of excess pigment gathered on the wooden structure. The clump of primulas is plucked from the earth and perched on the easel, recalling the rather grim term for still life, nature morte (dead nature). History, meanwhile, is a postcard of Artemisia Gentileschi's iconic painting of Judith beheading Holofernes.
