Lot description

Washington Related 1857 WASHINGTON'S DREAM Currier + Ives, NY. Litho 1857-Dated, Color Lithograph titled, "WASHINGTON'S DREAM", by Louis Maurer, Published by Currier & Ives, New York, Very Fine. This Patriotic Colorful large size Lithograph measures about 17" x 21.75". It is laid onto a heavy cardstock and margins trimmed with four even .5" margins, displaying the Printer's text line under the image but having no title "WASHINGTON'S DREAM" below. It appears even in overall light tone, ready to reframe and display. In this 1857 Lithograph, George Washington is shown sleeping at a table with his Revolutionary War battle plans spread before him. A Continental Army encampment with tents and armed sentries posted is visible through his open door, thus showing the background. In his "dream" floating above are shown three Female Allegorical Figures symbolize Prosperity, Liberty, and Justice on a globe labeled "America." It is quite possible that the artist is dreaming of American Independence and the preservation of the Union at a time when the Civil War was making its dissolution a distinct possibility. See: Harry T. Peters, Currier and Ives: Printmakers to the American People. 2 vols. New York, 1929-1931, p. 2061 The long-lived German-born Louis Maurer emigrated to the United States in 1851. In 1852, he began working for Currier and Ives, where he remained until 1860. See: Harry T. Peters, Currier and Ives: Printmakers to the American People. 2 vols.
