BIOGRAPHY: Watercolorist Lawrence Goldsmith was born in New York City and raised in Westchester, New York. Goldsmith studied watercolor with Eliot O'Hara at the Yale School of Art, Mario Cooper at the Art Students League and Reuben Tam at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School. The artist writes of his method in the book 40 Watercolorists and How They Work by Susan E. Meyer. "I look for a motif, not a scene. This gives the work an abstract quality. I try to give a strong impression of sky, water, forest, or whatever, without ever getting specific." The artist resided in Vermont with his wife. The couple summered on Monhegan Island in Maine where Goldsmith was a member of the professional Monhegan Artists.
