Lot description

Martin Gale (b.1949) Approaching the Town (2005) oil on canvas signed lower right, titled and dated verso h:76.25  w:91.50 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Martin Gale is not so much a landscape painter in the usual sense of the term, but as a painter of the contemporary environment in rural Ireland. His paintings, made in a meticulous, highly realist manner, usually include a figure, or perhaps a number of figures, who obviously belong in the location but are simultaneously slightly apart from it, as though lost in their own thoughts. That is, he brilliantly conveys the reality of country life and the complexities of our relationships with the land, past, present and future. Often, as here, he invites us to speculate about how the subject or subjects we see relate to their setting.
