Playing the perfect idiot, he created a liberated personality, an outlet from the repression of all that was moral and sophisticated (Collectionneur, p. 104). Here, in stark opposition to his stage persona, the famous comedian arrives at the theatre with song sheets, gloves, coat, and umbrella in hand, attempting professionalismbut his goofiness shines through.
