Lao Lianben’s oeuvre has featured a potent brand of minimalism which is often referred to by most as “Zen.” Ethereal in nature, Lao’s works are more often than not meditative and welcoming. Lianben interfaces contrast in a dialectical fashion by treating the opposing elements not through their mere physicality, but through how they affect the viewer. In his painting aptly titled Presence, the vast expanse of black does not dominate the outlying white space, but, by virtue of Lianben's methodology, is presented to the viewer as equally critical to the cohesiveness of the piece.
