ARTIST: HERVÉ MORVAN (1917-1980) SIZE: 31 x 47 1/4 in./78.7 x 120 cm PRINTER: Imp. SA Courbet, Paris DESCRIPTION: In 1947, designer Max Ponty drew a new logo for one of France's best known cigarette companies: it called upon the silhouette of a Spanish style dancer which evoked the Gypsy (La Gitane) image. Thirteen years later, Morvan took the idea to new nicotinic heights, creating a Flamenco dancer whose flouncing shirt is composed of the trademark smokes. His popular design, which won the Prix Martini in 1961, was also used on Gitanes packs and cartons. Many of Morvan's more than 800 posters were for films, but his broad colors and incisive wit are displayed best in his product posters. (Modern; Tobacco)
