JULIE DOWLING (born 1969) Flight 2013 acrylic, red ochre and plastic on canvas signed, titled and dated verso: Flight / by / Julie Dowling / June 2013 30.5 x 30.5cm PROVENANCE: Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Badimaya artist Julie Dowling has drawn on a wide range of cultural and historical influences throughout her career, however portraiture is her most frequented and a genre not usually embraced by Indigenous artists. Her earliest icon-like images were strongly influenced by renaissance religious paintings adapted to convey the cultural implications and impact of her grandmother's removal from her family as a member of the stolen generation.
