Lot description
Dick Jemison (American/Alabama, b. 1942), "Cave Painting #4", 1981, mixed media on canvas, signed, titled, dated and inscribed en verso, 62 3/4 in. x 61 1/2 in., unframed. Provenance: The Sideshow Gallery, Birmingham, AL, 1982. Note: Dick Jemison first decided to be an artist after visiting MOMA while on vacation in the 1950s and seeing the work of Abstract Expressionists. Greatly influenced by the painters Sam Francis and Ida Kohlmeyer, Jemison studied art in school, but it was travel that made a greater impact on his artistic works. He traveled to Europe, Africa, Cuba, India, and Australia, and while living in Santa Fe, Jemison began collecting African Tribal Art. In the current painting, the desert-like palette of sandy tans with hues of orange and turquoise call to mind both Santa Fe and African landscapes. The gestural lines and shapes speak to Jemisons background in action painting, particularly the influence of artists such as Kohlmeyer, Mark Rothko, and Hans Hofmann, while also referencing Tribal Art in the mask-like composition of the painting.
