Lot description
Nick Miller (b.1962) Nature and History II (1998) oil on linen signed lower left and dated 1994-8 lower right, titled on reverse h:122 w:137.50 cm. Provenance: Rubicon Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Collection of the late Vincent Ferguson; Thence by Descent In the late 1990s, Nick Miller began to take cuttings of flowers, shrubs and trees from his garden and bring them into the studio. Rather than making formal arrangements of them, he distributed them casually around his easel or elsewhere. Also pinned to the easel were postcards and Polaroids, stand-ins for the absent human figure. The paintings are direct accounts of the studio interior. He returned to the idea of painting cut vegetation over ten years later, and has continued to explore the subject since. For him, a painting is an honest account of time spent with a subject, be that a flower, a person or a landscape. The wilting cut plants imposed a strict time limit on the process.
