Lot description
Bronze. Japan, Meiji period Expressive and lively depiction of a trained ape. Artistically and regarding its craftsmanship, a masterpiece. The ape saru belongs to a sarumawashi (ape-tamer), who taught him how to box. This is suggested by position of the animal’s hands, but also by its clothing, which bears two hyotan (bottlegourds) in low-relief in the shoulder area. The facial expression, fur and folds in the clothing rendered very realistic and vivid. Almost black patina on the yellow bronze. Signed on the underside in an oval reserve, IKKO. Condition: Good condition Provenance: From a German private collection HEIGHT 18.3 CM
