Lot description
Artist: EMILE CLOUET Size: 23 1/4 x 32 in./59 x 81.3 cm Imp. J. Kossuth, Paris Swift, indeed. James Starley founded his company in 1859 to make sewing machines... and very swiftly realized where his machinery was headed. Just 10 years later he retooled his firm, renamed it the Coventry Machinists' Co., Ltd., and started making bicycles. In 1896, it would become the Swift Cycle Company, and began making motorcycles in 1898 and cars in 1900. Always outracing the pack, as well as its own name, Swift delivers this poster as a love-letter from England to France. (Bicycle; Art Nouveau)
