Lot description

ANDY MIKI (1918-1983), E1-436, ESKIMO POINT / ARVIATANIMALstone, signed in syllabics6.5" x 2" x 5" — 16.5 x 5.1 x 12.7 cm.Provenance:From The Collection of Stanley and Jean ZazelenchukLiterature:Norman Zepp, Pure Vision: The Keewatin Spirit, Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, 1986, page 35 & 37.Note:In the seminal publication on Keewatin artwork Pure Vision, curator Norman Zepp credits Andy Miki with being one of the seven major artists who most strongly represent the “Keewatin aesthetic”. Aptly described as “semi-representational, non narrative manner which indicates an intuitive preoccupation with the resolution of formal problems, often at the expense of easily recognizable subject matter.”Miki recalled that he began to carve the animals and birds that he knows in 1959. His sometimes ambiguous animals are at once humourous and elegant. The “linear quality is paramount to all Miki’s sculpture which, although three dimensional objects, are especially notable for their exquisite outlines.”Estimate: $2,000—3,000
