Lot description

Robert Landry (American, 1921-1991), "Landscape", oil on canvas, signed twice and "Louisiana Artists" exhibition label en verso, 24 in. x 36 in., framed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Robert Landry was a California-based watercolorist. He studied art on the GI Bill and became a commercial illustrator for the US Air Force. The lot presented here showcases Landry’s impressive control over oil paints as well as watercolor. Multiple washes of color and informal suggestions of houses and trees reveal the influence that his preferred medium of watercolor had on this rare canvas. Ref.: McClelland, Gordon, and Jay T. Last. California Watercolors 1850-1970: An Illustrated History & Biographical Dictionary. Santa Ana, CA: Hillcrest, 2002.
