Lot description
Moderno (late 15th century) Deposition, rectangular bronze plaquette, 94mm. x 58.4mm. at base, 60.4mm. at top, a fine old cast, rich medium brown patina, trace of a number in ink on the reverse Three figures, The Virgin, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, lower the body of Christ into an antique sarcophagus. Behind the Virgin stand St John and two women. To their left, Mary Magdalen, her hair dishevelled, throws out her arms in an attitude of grief. In the distance, beyond the entrance to the sepulchre, can be seen the walls of Jerusalem, Christ carrying the cross, and the Crucifixion. There are no signed versions of this plaquette, but there are enough similarities with other signed works to confirm the attribution to Moderno. The scenes on the side of the sarcophagus have been identified as episodes of the Passion (Molinier, Ricci), or scenes from the Legend of the Cross (Pope-Hennessy). The composition, which again shows the influence of Mantegna on Moderno, was much copied.
