Lot description

watercolor on paper on panel, monogrammed and dated 1883 at lower right, presented under glass in the likely original frame, retaining five old gallery labels on the verso. SS 36.5 x 25.5 in.; DOA 45.75 x 34 in. North was among the central artists of the Idyllic School, a late Victorian movement of British artists known for depicting nuanced rural landscapes combining elements of social realism and idealism. Quantock Hills in Somerset was a particular favorite of North, an area he first visited with a friend in 1860. This lush and poetic painting was completed one year prior to his marriage to Selina Weetch, daughter of a Somerset farmer. Exhibited at the Preston Guild Art Exposition, 1902.
