This is a work from the photographic oeuvre of the German artist Siegfried Wittenburg. The collage, comprised of 12 black and white photographs, depicts single people in an audience during a speech of the former chancellor Helmut Schmidt at the Universitätsplatz in Rostock in February 1990. Siegfried Wittenburg documented everyday life in the GDR and the environment in his photographs since 1978. The publication of his pictures was difficult in the GDR because the Stasi classified them as depicting reality worse. A certificate, signed ‘Siegfried Wittenburg’ and numbered ‘Nr. 3’ in black pen by the artist, is enclosed. The print is laminated on an Alu Dibond board. The Alu Dibond board has got an aluminum frame on the back for the mounting of the piece. The work is in very good condition. Merely in the upper area are two small slightly superficially damaged spots. The depiction measures 178 x 158 cm and the total dimensions, including the Alu Dibond board, are 180 x 160 cm. Siegfried Wittenburg (b. 1952) Self-educated, Siegfried Wittenburg dedicated himself to photography from 1977 onwards. In the 80s he already participated in exhibitions in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) and abroad. From 1982 onwards, he worked as the head of the youth photography club ‘Konkret’. Most of his photographs documented the daily life in the north of the GDR and they were consistently subject to censorship. Only after 1989, he was able to practice his work safely and uncensored. Today Wittenburg lives and works in Rostock, working as a photo artist, designer and author. (tm) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
