Resistance and trauma are the underlying themes in this highly suggestive picture done in the naïf style typical of the artist’s ‘Victorias’ period. Here two forms intertwine like puzzles pieced together: the yellow figure evidently female from its anatomical depiction, the phallic shape pressing onto symbolizing the male. Closer scrutiny of this enigmatic work reveals other human like forms inside the woman, a clear reference to childbirth and the attendant pain that is both felt and passed on as a new life is brought into the world.
