Lot description

Oil on panel Germany, circa 1930 Klaus Clausmeyer (1887-1968) - German painter and collector Signed 'Kl. Clausmeyer' lower right Dimensions: 80 x 60 cm Still life of dahlias in oriental ceramic vase This late summer bouquet of dahlias is a typical work of the German artist Klaus Clausmeyer (1887-1968), who has produced a large number of various flower still lifes. In the present one, the oversized dahlias in yellow and red tones fill a large part of the composition. The cup-shaped inflorescences are rendered peppy and sketchy and form a harmonious whole along with the fallen flowers and leaves. The painting is signed 'Kl. Clausmeyer.' lower right. It shows slight abrasion of color and stress cracks due to age. The panel is slightly concave. Inspection under UV light reveals small strengthening lines within the flowers as well as major areas of retouching to the lower left margin. The painting measures 80 x 60 cm. Klaus Clausmeyer (1887-1968) Born in Munich, Klaus Clausmeyer enjoyed a great success with his portraits and large-format society scenes. He was a collector as well; about 1000 objects of African, Asian and Oceanic art from his collection are now in the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. On his art, however, these objects had little influence. In addition to the works mentioned above, Clausmeyer created numerous floral still lifes.
