Value of old maps
Old map value depends on maker, region, date, state, edition, color, condition, size, provenance, and demand. A decorative map and an important first-state map are not the same market.

Auction records are market evidence, not a final appraisal. Condition, authenticity, provenance, completeness, demand, and market timing can materially change value.
Quick value checklist
- Photograph the full map, title cartouche, imprint, date, margins, verso, folds, color, plate marks, and frame condition.
- Measure the sheet and image area. Note backing, linen, mat burn, tears, repairs, foxing, fading, and trimming.
- Keep atlas covers, text leaves, certificates, receipts, and provenance with the map.

FAQ
Are old maps valuable?
Some are, especially important cartographers, rare states, desirable regions, original color, and strong condition. Many decorative maps are modest.
What is a map state?
A state is a version of a printed map. Changes to plates, dates, or text can affect rarity.
Should I remove a framed map?
Photograph it first. Do not remove fragile maps from frames without care.
