Antique travel trunk auction prices are observed sales, not a typical trunk value

This page documents a reproducible query contract for antique travel and steamer trunk auction records. It is a methods specification, not an appraisal of any individual trunk and not a claim of total market volume. A 2026-07-15 reproducibility run returned 160 raw rows and 157 unique candidates; 62 USD realised-price records passed the deterministic gates. Those 62 figures remain observed candidates until editorial, outlier, and source-license review is complete.

Headline observed candidates

Among the 62 gated USD realised-price records, the median was $65 and the middle 50% ran $25–$165, with an observed min–max of $10–$13,000. The sample covers 37 named auction houses and six represented calendar years inside a fixed window of 2016-01-01 through 2026-06-30. Every headline number is an observed-record count or price, not a typical-trunk value.

  • 62 gated USD realised-price records
  • 37 named auction houses
  • Median $65 · middle 50% $25–$165
  • Observed min $10 · observed max $13,000

Generic versus named luxury-maker records

One blended typical-trunk price would hide two markets. 53 generic or unnamed-maker records had a $50 median and $25–$110 middle 50%. 9 records whose titles name Louis Vuitton or Goyard had a $5,000 median and $3,250–$8,500 middle 50%. Luxury-maker attribution, the $1,000 generic high, and the $13,000 branded high still require manual review before they can be treated as publication-ready examples.

  • 53 generic records · median $50
  • 9 named luxury-maker records · median $5,000
  • Do not let a branded outlier define the generic range
  • No individual trunk is appraised by these medians

Method, inclusion, and coverage limits

The contract used two relevance-sorted Auction Data API queries — antique travel trunk and antique steamer trunk — at four 20-row pages each. Inclusion required a travel or steamer trunk form in the title, a positive USD realised price, a direct HTTPS source URL, and a date inside the fixed window. Estimates, asking prices, toys, parts-only lots, trunk-style furniture, and silent non-USD conversions are excluded. Annual counts describe sample coverage, not market volume.

  • 2019: 2 · 2022: 1 · 2023: 4 · 2024: 14 · 2025: 25 · 2026: 16 observed records
  • Exclusions included missing realised price, missing source URL, and non-USD currency
  • Year rows are coverage, not a price index
  • No inflation-adjusted trend is published

Review status and limitations

The stored snapshot is enough to specify the asset. It is not enough to freeze a public CSV or to present representative sale examples as reviewed. Publication of this methods page keeps the reviewer gate visible: outliers, luxury-maker names, and at least 20% of included rows still need a second reviewer, and source-link presentation still needs legal/editorial sign-off.

  • Use the object-level worth example or furniture hub, not this page, for a single trunk

How to use this page before ordering

This page gives search engines and visitors the same practical orientation: what the route is for, what evidence matters, and which next step best matches the appraisal decision.

Two markets, not one average

Generic unnamed-maker trunks and named Louis Vuitton or Goyard lots are different price worlds. Do not blend them into a typical-trunk value.

Observed lots, not your object

These figures are gated auction records. Condition, maker, completeness, and regional demand still have to be reviewed on the specific trunk.

Appraise one trunk next

Use the vernacular travel-trunk worth guide for object context, or start a signed report when you need a documented conclusion.

Questions people ask

What is an antique travel trunk worth?

There is no one typical-trunk price. Among 62 gated USD realised-price records, the median was $65 and the middle 50% ran $25–$165. Generic unnamed-maker records had a $50 median; nine lots whose titles name Louis Vuitton or Goyard had a $5,000 median. These figures do not appraise your trunk.

Why are Louis Vuitton and Goyard trunks priced so differently?

Named luxury-maker lots and generic steamer trunks are different markets. Blending them into one average hides both. Luxury-maker attribution and the $13,000 branded high still need manual review before they can be treated as publication-ready examples.

Do these auction prices appraise my trunk?

No. This page is a methods specification for observed auction records, not an appraisal of any individual trunk and not a claim of total market volume. Use the vernacular travel-trunk worth guide or a signed appraisal for one object.

What years and auction houses are in the sample?

The 62 gated records cover 37 named auction houses and six represented calendar years inside 2016-01-01 through 2026-06-30. Annual counts describe sample coverage, not market volume. No inflation-adjusted trend is published.

How do I get an antique trunk appraised?

Photograph construction, hardware, labels, lining, damage, and measurements as found. Instant Screener is a $9 unsigned first read. A signed PDF is $59. Insurance replacement-value is $99 after you ask the carrier. A room of furniture is a quote.

Can I download the trunk sale table?

Not yet. Required reviewer: editorial, source-license — pending. Outliers, luxury-maker names, and at least 20% of included rows still need a second reviewer before a public CSV is frozen.
