About Walter Leistikow

Walter Rudolf Leistikow (1865–1908) was a German landscape painter, graphic artist, printmaker, designer, and art critic. Born in Bydgoszcz (then Bromberg) on 25 October 1865, he trained under painter Alexander Flotow before establishing himself in Berlin, where he became a distinctive voice in late-19th-century German art. Leistikow is best known for atmospheric landscape paintings, particularly scenes of the Berlin and Brandenburg countryside, lakes, and forests. He also produced etchings, engravings, and graphic designs that reflect the transitional sensibilities between academic tradition and emerging modernist currents in Wilhelmine Germany. In addition to his studio practice, he wrote art criticism that influenced contemporary taste. Leistikow died in Schlachtensee, Berlin, on 24 July 1908 at the age of 42. His work is documented in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), which records over 350 attributed images, and his identity is cross-referenced across major authority files including Getty ULAN, VIAF, and Wikidata.

Common works and media

Collectors are most likely to encounter Leistikow's landscape oil paintings depicting wooded shores, lakes, and rural Brandenburg scenery, as well as etchings and engraved prints in similar subjects. Graphic designs, book illustrations, and poster art from his Berlin period also appear on the market. Works are typically signed and dated within his active period of roughly the mid-1880s through 1908.

Market and appraisal context

Leistikow's works appear at auction primarily as oil paintings, etchings, and works on paper. Values are influenced by medium, with paintings typically commanding more than prints or graphic works. Subject recognition — especially Brandenburg lake and forest scenes — can aid attribution. Provenance documentation, condition reports, and expert authentication are important given the age of the material and the breadth of his graphic output. Collectors should be aware that his relatively short career (he died at 42) and the mix of fine-art paintings and applied-design work mean that quality and rarity can vary significantly across categories. No specific realized-price data was available in the collected source pack, so price ranges should be confirmed against recent comparable auction results.

Appraisal caveats

  • The source pack does not include specific auction records or realized prices; market context is based on artist profile and medium data only.
  • RKD lists 351 recorded images, suggesting a substantial but not enormous body of work across paintings, prints, and graphic art.
