How to identify old watch brands

Do not stop at the name on the dial. Old watches can carry a dial brand, movement maker, case maker, retailer, and later replacement parts.

Quick identification checklist

  • Photograph the dial, case back, inside case, movement, crown, clasp, serial numbers, and any service marks.
  • Compare the dial brand with the movement signature. A mismatch may be normal, repaired, or a warning sign.
  • Look for metal marks: 14k, 18k, gold filled, stainless, coin silver, sterling, or platinum.
  • Record whether it runs, sets, winds, or has missing parts. Working state affects value but does not prove authenticity.

What matters most

For old watches, brand only starts the appraisal. Model, movement grade, case metal, originality, dial condition, bracelet, service history, and demand shape value. A Rolex, Omega, Hamilton, Elgin, Waltham, Bulova, or Longines name should still be checked at the movement and case level.

FAQ

Is the dial name enough to identify a watch?

No. Dial, movement, case, and papers should agree or be explained.

Should I open the watch?

Only if you can do it safely. A watchmaker can open fragile or valuable cases without adding damage.

Can a non-running watch still be valuable?

Yes, especially if it is rare, original, precious metal, or from a high-demand maker.
