About Robert Whitaker
Robert Whitaker (1939–2011) was a British photographer whose work became indelibly linked to the visual culture of 1960s rock music. Active during the height of the British Invasion, Whitaker is best known for his extensive photographic sessions with The Beatles between 1964 and 1966, producing images that remain among the most recognizable in popular music history. His most famous photograph—the so-called "Butcher Cover"—appeared on the controversial original sleeve of the US-only album Yesterday and Today (1966). Whitaker also photographed the supergroup Cream, and his images were incorporated into the Martin Sharp-designed collage on the cover of their landmark 1967 LP Disraeli Gears. His work is held in museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Whitaker died in Chailey, England, in September 2011.
