About Pieter van Bloemen

Pieter van Bloemen (1657–1720), known by the bent-name Standaart, was a Flemish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker celebrated for his Italianate landscapes, equestrian scenes, and animal subjects. Born in Antwerp and baptized on 17 January 1657, he was the eldest of three painter brothers—Jan Frans (called Orizzonte) and Norbert also achieved recognition. Van Bloemen traveled to Rome, where he joined the Bentvueghels, the society of expatriate Netherlandish artists, and absorbed the Italianate landscape tradition. After returning to Antwerp he became a guild master, producing compositions that blend Flemish precision with southern light and atmosphere. His works typically feature cavalry skirmishes, pastoral animal groups, travelers on Roman campagna roads, and bustling village markets. Paintings are usually monogrammed PVB or signed P. van Blommen. He died in Antwerp and was buried in St. Jacob's Church on 6 March 1720.

Common works and media

Common works include oil paintings on panel and canvas depicting Italianate pastoral landscapes with equestrian groups, cavalry and battle scenes, cattle and livestock in rural settings, travelers and soldiers along Roman roads, and village market scenes with animals. He also produced finished drawings and engravings in related subjects. Horses are a near-constant presence across his compositions.

Market and appraisal context

Van Bloemen's oil paintings appear regularly in Old Master auctions, with Italianate landscapes containing horses, cattle, and mounted soldiers forming the most commonly encountered category. Both panel and canvas supports are known. Attribution benefits from his characteristic PVB monogram or Blommen signature, though workshop participation and copies mean provenance and expert review remain important. Condition, compositional complexity, and the quality of animal rendering are key value drivers. His brothers' works surface in the same collecting area and can sometimes be confused with Pieter's output. Collectors should note that no single catalogue raisonné governs his oeuvre; the RKD remains the principal scholarly reference.

Auction categories and appraisal factors

Value drivers

  1. Attribution confirmed by monogram PVB or signature 'P. van Blommen'
  2. Support (panel vs. canvas), condition, and surface quality affect value
  3. Provenance history linking to historic collections tends to increase value
  4. Italianate landscape and equestrian subjects are the most sought-after categories
  5. Workshop participation and later copies after his compositions exist; attribution diligence recommended

Appraisal caveats

  • Works by Pieter van Bloemen may be confused with those of his brothers Jan Frans van Bloemen (Orizzonte) and Norbert van Bloemen, who worked in related genres.
  • No catalogue raisonné was identified in the source pack; attribution should reference RKD documentation and expert opinion.
  • No specific auction price records were available in the source pack; realized prices should be verified through auction databases.
