Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and designer born in Rodez and active in the postwar Paris art world. Mainly self-taught, he settled in Paris and began painting in earnest in 1946; his first solo exhibition followed at Galerie Lydia Conti in 1949. Institutional sources associate him with French abstraction and Tachisme, emphasizing broad, forceful strokes and a restricted palette of black, white, and subdued color. In the 1980s he developed fully black paintings, sometimes assembled from several panels, whose worked surfaces make light an active part of viewing.
