Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and designer born in Rodez and active in the postwar Paris art world. Mainly self-taught, he settled in Paris and began painting in earnest in 1946; his first solo exhibition followed at Galerie Lydia Conti in 1949. Institutional sources associate him with French abstraction and Tachisme, emphasizing broad, forceful strokes and a restricted palette of black, white, and subdued color.
