About Marco Ricci
Marco Ricci (1676–1729) was an Italian Baroque painter, etcher, and stage designer born in Belluno in the Republic of Venice. The son of Girolamo Ricci and cousin of the prominent painter Sebastiano Ricci, Marco is believed to have trained with Sebastiano, possibly in Split, before establishing his own career. He is best known for his landscape paintings, often featuring ruins, pastoral scenes, and architectural capricci, as well as for his pioneering work in theatrical set design. Ricci also produced a significant body of etchings and gouaches. His career took him beyond Venice to other Italian courts, and he is recorded as active during the first decade of the 18th century, with a documented period around 1706–1707. Collectors encounter his work primarily in the Old Master painting, drawing, and print markets, where his landscapes and stage designs are sought after for their atmospheric qualities and inventive compositions.

Common works and media
Ricci's most commonly encountered works include landscape paintings in oil on canvas, often depicting ruins, pastoral scenes, or imaginary architectural views (capricci). He also produced stage and set designs in gouache and ink wash, which are found in museum and auction contexts. His etched landscapes and figure studies circulate in the Old Master print market. Drawings in pen, ink, and brown wash are also well represented in institutional collections such as the RKD, which holds over a thousand related records. Works are variously signed with his name or one of its variant spellings (Rizzi, Rizi, Marchetto).
Market and appraisal context
Marco Ricci's works appear regularly in the Old Master auction market. Oil paintings, particularly landscapes and capricci, tend to achieve the strongest results, while his etchings and gouaches are more accessible entry points for collectors. Attribution can be challenging because of his close collaboration with Sebastiano Ricci, and works catalogued as "circle of" or "studio of" either Ricci command significantly less than securely attributed pieces. Provenance, condition, and the quality of the landscape composition are the primary valuation drivers. Comparable auction records from major houses should be consulted for any individual appraisal.
Auction categories and appraisal factors
Value drivers
- Attribution to Marco Ricci vs. workshop or circle of Sebastiano Ricci is a key factor; the two cousins collaborated closely and works are sometimes misattributed
- Medium significantly affects value: oil paintings generally command higher prices than etchings or gouaches
- Provenance linking to notable collections or exhibitions can substantially increase value
- Condition is critical for early 18th-century works; restoration history and craquelure patterns affect appraisal
Appraisal caveats
- The RKD records over 1,100 images attributed to Ricci or his circle, indicating a large body of work with varying levels of attribution certainty
- Death year is disputed between 1729 (RKD/Saur) and 1730 (Wikidata, some VIAF sources); this may affect cataloguing
