About Manuel Felguérez

Manuel Felguérez (1928–2020) was a Mexican painter and sculptor recognized as a leading figure of the Generación de la Ruptura, the generation of artists who in the mid-twentieth century broke from the dominant Mexican muralist tradition associated with Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco. Born in Valparaíso, Zacatecas, Felguérez studied in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Colarossi, where he trained under the sculptor Ossip Zadkine. He lived and worked in Paris for roughly two decades before returning to Mexico in the late 1960s. His work moved toward abstract and geometric expression, establishing him as one of the most important Mexican abstract artists of the post-war era. Collectors encounter his paintings, sculptures, and murals in museums and private collections worldwide.

Common works and media

Collectors and appraisers most commonly encounter Felguérez's abstract oil paintings on canvas, often featuring geometric compositions in bold color fields. He also produced welded and cast metal sculptures, mural-scale wall paintings, mixed-media works on paper, and graphic prints. His subjects range from purely non-objective geometric abstractions to stylized figurative references. Works are found in a range of sizes from small studies to large-format canvases and monumental public sculptures.

Market and appraisal context

Felguérez's works appear regularly in Latin American Art and Post-War Contemporary Art sales at major auction houses. His oil paintings on canvas—particularly large-format abstract and geometric compositions from his most recognized periods—tend to attract the strongest interest. Sculptures, mural studies, and works on paper also circulate at auction. Appraisal value depends on medium, dimensions, date of execution, provenance, condition, and exhibition or publication history. Works with documented gallery or estate provenance typically command a premium. As with all post-war Latin American art, condition reports and authentication from qualified specialists are essential for accurate valuation.

Auction categories and appraisal factors

Common auction categories

  • Latin American Art
  • Post-War & Contemporary Art

Value drivers

  1. Medium and scale: large-format paintings and monumental sculptures generally command stronger results than smaller works on paper or prints
  2. Provenance: works with gallery or estate provenance, or exhibition history, tend to perform better at auction
  3. Period: works from Felguérez's Paris years or his most recognized abstract-geometric phase may carry more market interest than later production
  4. Condition and authenticity: as with all post-war Latin American art, condition reports and expert authentication are important valuation factors

  • No major auction-house records were available in this source pack; valuation factors above are general guidance, not price predictions.
