Julie Mehretu (born 1970, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is an Ethiopian-American contemporary artist whose large-scale, multi-layered paintings map the psychogeography of space and the cumulative effects of urban sociopolitical change. She earned an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997 and has since become one of the most recognized figures in contemporary abstract painting.
