John Stanton Ward CBE (1917–2007) was an English portrait painter, landscape artist, and illustrator celebrated for his refined figurative style. Born in Hereford, he studied at the Royal College of Art under Gilbert Spencer and Barnett Freedman before serving in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. After the war he built a distinguished career painting portraits of British royalty — including the Princess of Wales in her wedding dress and the christenings of Prince William and Prince Harry — as well as leading figures from public life, the judiciary, and the arts. He also produced widely admired illustrations for literary works by Laurie Lee, H.E. Bates, and Joyce Grenfell, and contributed drawings to Vogue. Elected a Royal Academician in 1966, Ward exhibited at major London galleries including Agnew's and the Maas Gallery. His work is held by the National Portrait Gallery, Tate, and numerous UK public collections.
